When I grow up…

I loved talking about that subject when I was little.

I didn’t really know what the occupation that I was dreaming of was called, but I knew I wanted to do something that involved creativity (I was the biggest art nerd in the world basically from birth), something where I got to write (I toyed with the idea of journalism for a little while) and something that I loved, passionately.

I remember sitting in the computer lab at university, doing my first Photoshop course and crying happy tears realising that one of my favourite past times, drawing on Microsoft Paint (hey it was the 90’s) was basically the entree to my impending career.

I was still at uni when I got offered my first industry role, a Marketing Assistant role in a big law firm. It was part-time, a mix of marketing and graphic design and I absolutely loved it - as I write this (19 years later) my Marketing Manager and boss Ashley is actually one of my clients at my agency. It’s lovely how the world works sometimes :)

Over the next 7 years I worked my way up in the marketing world taking some amazing contracts and roles across a few different industries. As the GFC started to impact the world, I was the head of marketing for a major international real estate franchise group. I can still remember I was on a weekend away, staring at the Opera House in Sydney when I got the call from my CEO to say my team was being cut down. I knew the call was coming, we’d talked about it in-depth in the leadup and though I was expecting to feel anxiety or dread… I felt only this wave of excitement.

I walked back into the restaurant and said calmly to my friends ‘well, now seems like the perfect time to start that business I’ve been talking about’.

And so I did. I was single, had a mortgage, knew absolutely nothing about running a business and didn’t know one person who had ever run their own business. It was unchartered territory AND we were in the middle of the GFC ‘the greatest financial crisis since the depression’ and there I was - starting a business! My parents were cautious but incredibly supportive and my friends cheered me on and said ‘Flick you have balls of steel’.

I of course got the occasional neigh sayer… ‘you don’t know anything about running a business ‘how will you pay your mortage’ ‘but you are so young’ ‘I don’t know any girls your age running businesses’ blablabla. Honestly? It didn’t phase me. I knew with my passion, skills and ability to manifest epic things into my world I was bound for success.

Fast forward 15 years, and here I am.

I’ve built a brilliant business, worked with incredible clients around the world, welcomed amazing people into my team (and some pretty unamazing ones too #lessons). I’ve built a name, created incredible referral relationships, made lots of tough decisions, learned more than I ever thought possible, brought in millions of dollars worth of projects and helped my clients to make a positive impact on the world.

…and I have loved it.

As I sit here and look back over the last 15 years I’m honestly #proudAF at what I’ve been able to achieve and now I can’t wait to help amazing business owners do the same.
